Calgary Security: What To Do In The Event of a Break-In

Overview: Break-ins are something that everybody thinks won't happen to them, and this is true, up until the moment that your home is broken in to! Sometimes no matter how many prevention methods you have in place, you can still get unlucky. In this blog we'll talk a bit about what to do in the event of a break-in.

Break-ins and burglaries can be traumatic experiences for any home owner. Sometimes even the greatest home security system is not enough to dissuade some criminals and so it is important that everyone knows what to in the event of break-in.

So, what should you do?

When you first realize you've had a break-in

The very first thing you should do when you realize you've been broken in to is to call the police. This is essential for both your personal security and for insurance reasons. For most insurance companies, you need to file a police report within 24 hours of the incident for your insurance claim to be valid, so getting the police involved as early as possible is crucial. While you're waiting for the police it is best to stay at a friend's house nearby in case the criminal is still near your home, and to remove the temptation to alter the crime scene by searching through your things.

It is also important to note any important information that you may forget later when talking to the police. What time did you discover your house had been burgled? Did you see the criminal? What did they look like? Any details you can remember are best written down as shock can have a powerful effect on the memory.

Once the police have come and gone, it's time to get any point of entries temporally repaired for the night. If you're worried about the security of your house, it can be a good idea to stay with friends or family until you can get a contractor in to fix the windows or doors.

The next day

This is when you need to start filing insurance claims. It can be a painful process but it's a necessary evil that will help you get your house back to being your home. If haven't done it already, now is also a good time to finish securing your house, cleaning up any mess, and throwing away broken items. You can even start planning more permanent renovations to your windows and doors, and scheduling contractors.

The next week

As the dust settles on the break-in you can start looking into how you will increase your home security. It can be quite common for burglars to revisit a property they have previously broken into so boosting your existing home security and home surveillance systems is very important. All measures should be taken, such as replacing locks, increasing window security and installing more deterrents.

Bottom Line: When it comes to burglaries and break-ins, no-one wants to admit that they could be next. Even those with extensive home security systems are at risk and it is important for every homeowner to know what to do in the event of a break-in.
